Since Vault City and Gecko are inextricably
linked via the quests that you have to perform for both of them I
will do them together.
Help out Joshua part 1
You will arrive in the courtyard of Vault
City where the people that aren't citizens get to live. Head
over to the greeting office which is right inside the gate, check
out the lockers and desks there for some stuff. Leave that
building and check out the tent to the northwest. There is a
woman there who needs help freeing her husband from inside of Vault
City. Tell her that you will help her out.
Find Doll and Get Wrench
There is a child standing outside of the tent
near the barwho has lost her doll. The doll is located
behind the building that houses the bar, it looks like a box.
Give the doll to the girl and watch what she says, after a
while she should indicate that she has hidden a wrench under some
rocks behind the bar. Check out the pile of rocks and you
will find the wrench.
Get Cassidy
Head into the bar and talk to the bartender
Cassidy, you can get him to join up with you and you would be well
advised to take him along. Cassidy is one of the better NPC's
that you will find, just don't give him any drugs at all as he has
a heart problem.
Fix Autodoc
Check out the clinic building to the
northwest of the bar where you will find the doctor, once you find
out about dermal implants you come here to get them done. You
should fix the autodoc if you have the repair skill to do it at
this time, if not just come back later.
Cure Sick Charlie
To the south of the doc is a tent that has a
man lying on the ground in it. If you use your doctor skill
on him you can diagnose his condition, he has rad poisoning.
Give him one dose of Rad-Away and that should gain you some xp for
helping him out.
Get Plow for the Smiths
To the east of the clinic is a tent where you
will find the Smith family. If you can get a plow from Harry
on the other side of town for the Smiths you will gain some xp and
a Desert Eagle from Mr. Smith. You just need to buy the plow
from Harry he is on the west side of the town, if your Barter skill
is good you can bargain the price of the plow down.
Talk to Vic's Friend
Head to the shack just north of the cage on
the west side of town. He will give you the locations of
Broken Hills, New Reno and NCR. If Vic is with you there is
some extra dialogue.
Get False Citizenship Papers or Day Pass
Head to the north and into the next
area. Go into the building to the east in front of the main
gate. You can either get a Day Pass from the guy in the back
room to get into the city or a better way to do things would be to
get some false citizenship papers from Skeev the guy in the room
out front. Talk to Skeev and he will set you up with the
papers for a price. You can use the citizenship papers to
pose as a citizen which allows you to go into Vault City at night
and also allows you to use the all of the Amenities shops.
The only limitations are that you should not meet up with Sergeant
Stark at night and you can't get into the vault. Once you get
your way in you should head inside Vault City.
Get Val some tools
Head to northeast and in the Maintenance
building on the corner you will find Val, if Vic is with you you
will get some interesting dialogue between the two of them.
Otherwise you can offer to help Val out by getting her a pliers
tool and a wrench. You should have acquired the pliers by
now as well as the wrench, give them to her and then come back
later to claim your reward which is a Super Tool Kit.
Get some books
Head over to the Information Center it is to
the north of the entrance the second building on the left.
Talk about books with Chief Librarian Kohl there and he should be
willing to give some up to you for free if you show how much you
really like them.
Help out Joshua part 2
The woman at the beginning is looking to get
back her husband. He is Joshua and he is being held at the
Servant Allocation Center to the east of the Information Center, if
fork over some cash to Barkus the man holding him he will release
him. Depending on your Barter skill you might be able to
bargain him down.
Council Area
Head north to the council area in the
southwest corner you will find the Parlor in a room to the south
inside that building there are some things to be had in a desk and
a bookcase.
Talk to the First Citizen
Head to the large building in the north and
then go to the room in the southeast corner to talk to the First
Citizen. Tell her that you are a descendent of the original
Vault Dweller and show her your uniform, watch out she is a bit
touchy. She will offer you a quest to "take care" of the
problem at Gecko. Offer to help.
Talk to Senior Council Member Mclure
Mclure is on the far west side of the council
building. Talk to him about Gecko and the Raiders. You
can also try and take the citizenship test that is offered by the
man in the room in the north of the building, but unless you are
superman you won't pass.
Sergeant Stark
On your way out to Gecko you should stop by
the Corrections Center it is right outside the Vault which is on
the east side of the south part of the city. He will tell you
about the Raiders and give you a mission to scout around Gecko for
him. Take him up on this. Then head over to Gecko, on
your way make sure to walk through all the squares around Gecko to
complete the mission.
Gecko Manager's Office
When you get to Gecko you should head to the
Manager's Office to the north of the entrance. There you will
find Harold, still alive and kicking from the first game. He
will give you the lowdown on Gecko and that they need a Hydro
Electric Magnetosphere to make their power plant work
properly. Head back to Vault City.
Vault City First Citizen and Mclure and Super Tool Kit
Talk to the First Citizen and let her know
what needs to be done to fix the power plant. She will tell
you that she wants the Gecko mutants "taken care of" not their
power plant fixed. Be sure not to argue her decision, be
careful with this conversation, save before you talk to her as if
you make her too mad she kicks you out of Vault City for
good. After you talk with her go talk to Mclure let him know
about Gecko and he will tell you where to get the part. He
will also tell you that he will give you your citizenship despite
what the First Citizen wants. Go get the part and after you
get it go over to Maintenance and get the Super Tool Kit from Val,
you did give her the tool and wrench right?
Gecko Managers Office and Reactor
Go to the manager's office and get the part
requisition form from the desk behind Harold. You can also
get the coolant report, but that is only necessary if you want to
destroy the plant, I'm assuming you won't do this.
Go inside the plant on the east side of
town. Talk to the ghoul behind the counter and he will tell
you where everything is located in the plant. Head through
the door to the north and then go into the door second from the
left. There you will find Jeremy. Give him the part
requisition form to get the Three Stage Plasma transformer for
later. Then go down the hall to the east and get the yellow
pass key out of the locker in a room down there. In the next
room to the east there is a blue pass key in the bookcase
there.
Head south and east to the door leading to
the reactor. The first locked door will take the yellow pass
key to open, just use the key on the door. Once you are
through that first locked door go through the door to the east and
in a room to the north you will find a bookcase with the red pass
key in it.
Go south and east to the far east side of the
plant and talk to Festus in the room in the southeast corner.
If you do not have a high speech skill, he will not be much help
and you will have to take care of business on your own. If
you do have a high enough speech skill (not sure what skill level
you need), you can convince him to help you out by encouraging him
and avoiding the negative dialogue options. Thanks to Thomas
for that tidbit.
If you end up having to do it yourself then
go north and west and then north using the red pass key on the
locked door. Once you are at the reactor controls talk to
Hank the glowing ghoul in front of the control panel. If you
have the coolant report and you want to destroy Gecko you can give
it to Hank and he will turn off the coolant, you should not do this
if you want to keep Gecko alive! Talk to Hank about the core,
he will mention the robot. Use the terminal behind Hank to
control the robot. Log onto the terminal and choose the first
option then choose the option to use the robot. It presents
you with the activation codes. Enter the codes in this order,
A1546761; 5B576005; 35C76863. Then you will have to manually
enter the procedures to install the new part once you select the
correct option, try them all out, if your Science skill is good
enough you could find some interesting things. The order that
the commands are entered once you get into the programming mode is,
Amplify Plutonium Gamma Shield; Deharmonize Neptunium Impeller;
Calibrate Uranium Rod Driver; Set Voltage For Saturn Class
Capacitor; Test Jupiter Wave Compiler. You can figure this
out by looking at the parts of the reactor and seeing what order
they are laid out in around the reactor. Execute the program
and once the robot returns you can then enter the final command to
install the new part, don't turn off the coolant valve! You
can also put the part in yourself by going into the reactor and
taking damage, but you get more XP using the robot.
Talk to Festus again and he will let you know
the reactor needs to be optimized for peak performance. Offer
to help out and he will give you a data disk that you will need to
put data onto from the computers in the vault in Vault City.
Gecko North Side/Junkyard-Car Part!
Head north after you get out of the reactor
into the junkyard north of Gecko. Talk to Percy in the
Survival Gear Locker to the west, he will tell you about his friend
Woody that got lost in the Den. You will find out about him
later. There is a first aid book in the building to the east
of the shop in a bookcase.
In the building to the northeast of Percy's
shop you will find Skeeter. Give him the Three Stage Plasma
Transformer you got from Jeremy and he will offer to upgrade one of
your weapons for free. Ask Skeeter about a battery for a car
and he will tell you about the Fuel Cell Regulator that he
has. If you give him the Super Tool Kit that you got from Val
he will give you the part. This is all you need to get the
car running, well you will also need 2000 gold to give to Smitty
for the car.
In front of the broken reactor you will find
a building where Gordon of Gecko is hanging out, if you have ever
seen the movie Wall Street, he is a hoot. Also you should get
the Cheesy Poofs that are in either the locker or the desk in his
shack.
To the west of the reactor there is a
building head around the top to the northeast corner of that
building and go inside, there you will find a ladder leading down.
Once you are down there head to the south east around the
corner and talk to the giant mole rat down there. Give him
some Cheesy Poofs and he should give you a talisman that makes you
a member of his cult and he will tell you about his plan to take
over the world. I don't know what purpose this serves
although it did give me and option to kill him that I did not
take. If anyone has anything more about the rat to tell me I
would be interested. Anyway, you can now head back to Vault
City.
Vault City...AGAIN!
Go back and talk to Mclure and he will give
you your citizenship papers when you tell him that you have fixed
the Gecko reactor. Then you can gloat a little to the First
Citizen, not too much as she might get too bitchy though.
Make sure to check out all the Amenities offices in the city for
neat stuff. Then head into the Vault.
The Vault
Vault City's vault has some interesting
things inside of it. On the first level you can talk to the
doctor and his assistant. If you pursue your line of
questioning long enough with the assistant you can offer to give a
"sample" to the Vault City genetic pool. If your doctor skill
is at least 75 you can get information from the doctor about
implants. Also you can use the computer behind the assistant
if your Science is very high to get some interesting
information. You will probably need to come back later to
complete those quests though.
Go to the second floor and pick the locks on
all the doors that you can, notice that the all the boxes contain
large amounts of water chips, the irony is thick from the first
game. The water chips are worthless so don't bother taking
them. Check out the footlockers for the good stuff.
Also if your Strength is high enough you can force open the jammed
doors or take some Buffout and open them for more stuff. I
think you probably need a 10 Strength or so to open the
doors. One of the footlockers in one of the locked rooms has
a wrench and tool in it, so if you were unable to find one or the
other there you go. Also one of the jammed rooms has a chip
in it that will raise one of your stats if used in a machine later
in the game.
Go to the third floor. Go to the
southwest and use the computer in that room in the southeast corner
for some XP. Then head to the east and talk to Martin, he
will tell you where the main computer is located. Go to the
computer which is the only one that is talking and get the
optimization data from it.
Back to Gecko
Head back to Gecko and the reactor and use
the newly optimized disk on the reactor computer where you
controlled the robot. Festus will tell you to do this if you
talk to him.
Get the Car at the Den also finish the Woody quest
While this is not exactly part of Vault City
and Gecko it is related. Head back to the Den and go to
Smitty in the west side of town. Make sure you have 2000 gold
before going there. Give him the 2000 and the part and he
will fix the car up for you. You can then have him install
the other part that you got from Klamath which will help with fuel
economy, this will cost 750. I found that I could barter with
Smitty to get some of my money back, I suppose you could steal it
from him too. I would also barter with him for the energy
cells that he has on him so that you can use them to fuel the car
when it runs low.
Smitty fuels the car up for you when he gives
it to you, but if you want to fuel it later you will need to use
either the Small Energy Cells or the Micro Fusion Cells on the hood
of the car. Just click and hold on the hood until a menu pops
up, then click on the backpack icon, then click on the appropriate
cell in your inventory and voila!
Head to where the building next to the
Brotherhood building on the west side and get the guy in the
building with the coffin to show you the "Mummy." When he
opens the coffin you will notice that it is Woody inside there and
the quest is solved.
Next would have been Broken Hills if I hadn't lost interest in doing this walkthrough sometime in 1999. Sorry.
