Well, you are almost done now. You can
head up to the Military Base to take out the last of the mutants
and the vats now. Make sure to take a couple of radios and an
electronic lockpick with you. These are necessary if you want
to make it into the base without everyone shooting you. Of
course if your Speech skill is not very high then you won't be able
to bluff anyone anyway. There are two options to the base, be
slick and avoid a lot of nasty combat, or shoot everyone.
Entrance
Option 1
The entrance to the base is guarded by two Nightkin and two
super mutants. If you have a radio you can use it to trick
three of the guards into leaving the entrance by giving them a
little radio chatter in what the designers obviously intended as a
nod to Star Wars. Once the guards have left you can move up
to the next guard, make sure you are wearing the robes from the
Cathedral or you will be automatically attacked. If you have
the robes on you will get the option to try and bluff the guard, if
your Speech skill is high enough you will be able to get past him
without a fight and without alerting the base. You can use an
electronic lockpick to get in the door. All these points are
moot if you have any NPC characters with you, the designers even
admitted that by this point the NPC characters were more of a
liability and they didn't expect people to hang onto them.
You can leave them outside the base (except for Dogmeat) if you
want and pick them up on your way out.
Option 2
If you can't convince anyone of anything then you will have to
shoot your way into the base. If you shoot your way into the
base prepare for a warm reception on level 1. To open the
front door you can electronic lockpick it or grab the data tape off
of the mutant guarding the door and get the code off the
tape. If you need some extra help you can go back to the
Brotherhood after finding the base and tell Maxson and the Elders
about the base. If you tell them you will attack you will
find that if you return directly to the base that there will be
several Brotherhood Paladins waiting there that will join in with
you to fight the mutants on the outside of the base. The
Paladins will not follow you into the base though. Thanks to
Johnny for reminding me to put that last part in.
Miscellaneous
You can also have one of the mutants take you directly to the
Lieutenant from the entrance, but this is somewhat difficult as you
need to kill the Lieutenant and his guards, blow up the vats and
then fight your way back out of the base. It can be done
though.
Level 1
Option 1
Once you get into the base if you have not alerted anyone of
your presence (keep wearing the robes for now) you will find that
there is no one at the entrance. There are about four super
mutants hanging out to the northeast. Head over to the
northwest and check out a computer control room that is located
near the elevator. If you use your science skill on the
computer (I told you to study up on that!) and then use the
computer you will be able to get an interface screen for the robots
that are running around the Military Base. If you try any of
the initial options it gives you an error, but then you are able to
modify the pest control options for the robots change the option to
seek out large pests this keeps them from attacking you and will
also make them kill any mutants near them. Since the force
fields are down you can head over to the elevator and proceed to
level 3.
Option 2
If you had to shoot your way in, three super mutants will be the
welcoming committee. They are armed with a rocket launcher
and miniguns, my advice in these combats is always take out the guy
with the rocket launcher first! His weapon does the most
damage. You will find that once you take out the mutants that
there are two different types of force fields one is a reddish
orange and the other is yellow. The reddish orange fields can
be walked through although you take some damage, and the yellow
fields can be brought down permanently by blowing up the emitter
(right next to the field) or temporarily by using your repair skill
on the emitter. Head over to the northwest and check out a
computer control room that is located near the elevator. You
will have to bring down some yellow fields to get in. If you
use your science skill on the computer (I told you to study up on
that!) and then use the computer you will be able to get an
interface screen for the robots that are running around the
Military Base. If you try any of the initial options it
gives you an error, but then you are able to modify the pest
control options for the robots change the option to seek out large
pests this keeps them from attacking you and will also make them
kill any mutants near them. If you want to avoid more combat
I would suggest not going to level 2, if you want to kick more butt
by all means go there. Make sure that you use the Stealth Boy
and your Sneak skill when moving around as you will be able to
fight a lot of the mutants one at a time as the others will not
engage you in combat as they don't see you("George what you
shooting at?").
1A and 2A
Do this after either option 1 or 2 above. Once you setup
the robots you can head over to the east where another computer is
located that controls the force fields. What you need to do
is use your science skill on the computer then you use the computer
until you hack into it and the use your science skill again and if
you are good enough you will bring down some or all of the yellow
fields on level 1. Once that is done you can look at the
computer with your binoculars icon, this should give you a hint
that there is some sort of port on the computer. Right click
and hold on the computer until your menu comes up and then click on
your backpack icon and the select the radio from your
inventory. This will use the radio on the computer and you
can then use another radio to toggle the force fields. You
may have to try this a number of times if your science skill is not
up to par, but if you read a lot of books at the Hub you should be
okay. Now head to level 3. Thanks to Eric and others
for the radio tip as I never ended up doing it right on the many
times I played the game through.
Level 2
Hmmm what is there to say about level 2? How about, don't
go there! Unless you are looking for a fight there is no
reason to go to level 2. There are a lot of super mutants
there and they don't like you! Obviously, you will find a ton
of equipment and gain experience, but it isn't a level you need to
go to to finish the base. Perhaps later I'll go into some
details of what is on level 2, but for now that about sums it
up.
Level 3
Option 1
When you get to level 3 head to the east and around the corner,
you will probably encounter some traps, but you will need to keep
your robes on, so make sure your health is up. When you come
around the corner you will find a super mutant guarding the area
that you need to go into, you will probably pass a Nightkin on your
way over here. The other elevator on this level does not
function you need to go past the prisoner block to the elevator
that is located there. Go talk to the super mutant there, he
will tell you that you need to leave, don't ask too many questions,
just agree then you can walk right past him through the prisoner
block and to the elevator. Once you get to the elevator head
down to level 4. This gains you 2000xp for sneaking into the
depths of the base.
Option 2
Shoot everyone on level 3. Kick butt. You will be
met with heavy resistance when you come out of the elevator.
Get to the elevator to level 4 through the prisoner block and head
down to level 4.
Level 4
Option 1
Level 4 is not tough at all, if you have made it this far by
bluffing everyone you have it made. You will see three super
mutants to the southwest of the elevator, near them is a Mr. Handy
robot. Head over there, use your standard bluff on the mutant
that challenges you. Then use your repair and science skills
on Mr. Handy to get him up and running, send him over to the vats
to clean them up, this gives you 1000xp. Then head into the
vat control room to the north and hack your way into the computer
and set the base to self destruct on a three minute silent
countdown. Either that or blow up the computer with
explosives. Then run your butt back out to the world map, you
should be able to get there without anyone challenging you
(although if you blow up the computer instead of hacking it I am
not sure if an alert is sounded).
Option 2
Level 4 can be tough for the guy that wants to shoot everything
up. Assuming you shot your way through level 1 though you
should be prepared for this one, instead of bluffing your way past
the super mutants to the southwest just shoot them, then use the
same procedure on Mr. Handy as described above, he will take out
the force field for you that is in front of the vat control
room. Otherwise, just use your repair skill on the emitter or
blow the emitter with explosives. Since you are shooting
things up you might as well head over to the east and kill the
Lieutenant and his guards, there really isn't any point in talking
to him as he will not reason with you, but he is kind of an
interesting character. I would advise entering combat mode
before you come around the corner and then shoot up the guard with
the rocket launcher (the guards are hard to see as the are up
against the southern wall of the room) and then take out the
Lieutenant. Once you take them out you will find a bunch of
stuff on them as well as in the locked lockers in the room.
One of the lockers contains the key that will activate the nuclear
bomb in the Cathedral. If you haven't already blown up the
Cathedral this is a useful item to have especially if your science
skill isn't up to par.
Once you take out the Lieutenant head back to the vat control
room and either blow up the computer or hack into it and set it to
self destruct. Then run your butt back out to the world map,
considering you had to kill everything to get down here this
shouldn't be a problem.
RESULT!
The end. End game, finale, finish, au revoir, hasta la
vista.
Miscellaneous End Stuff
When you get back to the world map the vats
will blow and you will be taken to the end game sequence. Let
me tell you how this goes, if you completed the game in a very
short time you will not get the bad endings for the Hub or the
Followers of the Apocalypse. I think you have to complete the
game in less than 86 game days or something like that.
If you didn't fix the water pump for
Necropolis you get a bad ending for them. If you didn't bring
Tandi back to Shady Sands you get no ending for them, if you did
bring her back you get a good ending. If you didn't help
Killian you don't get an ending for Junktown, if you did then you
get a good ending. If you helped the Brotherhood of Steel,
then you get a good ending for them, if you killed Rhombus in the
Brotherhood then you get a bad ending for them. If you killed
all the Raiders you get a good ending, if any were left alive then
you get a bad ending for them.
When you get to the Overseer and he tells you
that you have to leave, if you have the Bloody Mess trait then you
will pull out a gun and blow him away! I love that. If
you don't have that trait then you can hit the "A" key and enter
combat mode and shoot the crap out of the Overseer, otherwise you
let him go. You can also keep continuously hitting "A" to
keep yourself in combat mode then you can enter the vault and then
go back to the world map and keep playing. Don't go back to
the vault entrance or the game will end.
